Safety Maps | How Safe Is Your Building?

by | Jul 23, 2020

What is a safety map?

Safety maps are one of the most important components of a safe and compliant building that is crisis ready. They are created, documented and displayed to aid in emergency preparation and response. Documents such as fire evacuation maps, severe weather shelter maps, and safety device location maps (AEDs, alarm pulls, extinguishers, etc.) should be displayed throughout your building. This is especially important for occupancy types that will regularly hold a large number of occupants at a time.

To see which occupancy type your building(s) falls under according to the National Fire Protection Association, view this NFPA 101 Quick Guide.

Why are safety maps so important?

Safety maps are critical in high occupancy building types such as schools, event venues, offices and manufacturing plants. According to a recent report from the NFPA, fire departments responded to 1,318,500 fires in 2018. These fires resulted in an estimated 3,655 civilian deaths,15,200 injuries and $25.6 billion in property loss. You can view the links below for additional statistics on fires, severe weather, health emergencies and active shooters in the U.S.

Even though life threatening emergencies like fire, storms and active shooters may not seem likely, it’s important to be prepared for them. This means not only getting clear, quality maps on your walls and safety systems but also regularly inspecting your emergency items and sprinklers and making fire and severe weather drills a regular occurrence.
