Wayfinding and Safety Maps for Apartments and Condos

School Safety Map

Multi-unit buildings with multiple residents, like apartment or condo complexes, need clear and up-to-date signage for both general wayfinding and for emergency situations. Campus maps and directories are more informational maps to help residents and visitors easily find their way around a multi-building complex. These maps are great for visitor management and can be used for marketing purposes on websites, brochures, or apps. Safety maps like fire evacuation, severe weather, and security maps help residents and local authorities to respond to an emergency.

Fire evacuation maps for apartment complexes must be customized for each specific location while meeting various regulatory requirements and local fire codes. Whether showing the safest path away from a fire, designating severe weather shelters, or highlighting the location of safety equipment, maps are an important part of how you plan for and respond to emergencies. Our on-staff experts will make sure every map is up to code and meets all national, state, and local regulations.

Way Finding and Safety Maps

No Floor Plans? No Problem.

Designing emergency evacuation maps begins with a floor plan or blueprint. If you don’t have floor plans or the ones available are outdated, we can help modernize your floor plans and ensure your emergency response resources are optimized for safety and compliance.

Why Apartment Maps Need to be Up-To-Date

U.S. fire departments responded to an average of 80,000 fires per year in apartments or multi-family housing structures (National Fire Protection Association). Under NFPA regulations, building evacuation maps are the responsibility of property owners or landlords in shared or public areas like lobbies, staircases, and hallways. Most importantly, it is their job to make sure everyone can find exits or safety in any emergency situation. Without proper signage, property owners or landlords risk being liable for any injuries or deaths related to fires and other emergencies. In addition to proper signage, risk assessment and planning is one of the best ways to prepare for and respond to fire evacuation, severe weather, or security threats before they happen.

Apartment Safety Map Requirements

Evacuation maps and other emergency maps must often follow NFPA regulations as well as any federal or state regulations, which can vary by location, occupancy level, and building type. Local fire codes and pre-incident planning requirements must also be considered. Maps must be customized to each facility and include features specific to the map’s purpose. These can include (but are not limited to) easy-to-read floor plans, fire exit doors, primary and secondary egress routes, location of safety equipment, labeled stairwells, building mechanicals, and shut offs.
