Schools

“School safety mapping should be a well thought out collaboration between fire safety experts and the school.”

— Tony Jones, Building Maps President & CFPS

Designing Maps for Schools

Accurate and up-to-date signage is a critical part of responding to school emergencies. Fire evacuation maps highlight the best routes to safety, severe weather maps lead students and teachers to designated shelter areas, and security maps help coordinate emergency responses with local authorities. Wayfinding maps like campus maps help students, teachers, and visitors navigate the school’s campus. Campus maps can also be used on signage, websites, brochures, and apps to help with visitor management. Every map must be customized for the school and according to a specific function. Our on-staff experts will make sure your school maps are up to code and meet all national, state, and local regulations.

No Floor Plans? No Problem.

Designing emergency evacuation maps begins with a floor plan or blueprint. If you don't have floor plans or the ones available are outdated, we can help modernize your floor plans and ensure your emergency response resources are optimized for safety and compliance.

Why School Maps Need to be Up-To-Date

U.S. fire departments respond to approximately 3,230 school fires every year (National Fire Protection Association). Planning and risk assessment is the best way to prepare for fire and security threats before they happen and up-to-date school maps are an important part of this preparation. Not only are safety maps used for fire drills and other emergency planning with teachers and students, but local fire departments also use them for pre-incident planning. The more accurate and up-to-date your maps are, the better prepared you and your students will be for an emergency.

School Safety Map Requirements

Any evacuation plans for schools or safety maps should align with state requirements and local fire codes. Using a free DIY school map marker probably won’t create code-compliant maps. Building Maps can determine your requirements and will help you create and maintain your school’s maps. Most school maps include easy-to-read floor plans with a “you are here” marker. Specific features will vary depending on the map’s purpose but can include fire exit doors, primary and secondary egress routes, fire pull locations, labeled stairwells, AED locations, and severe weather shelter locations.
