What to Include on your Security Maps

by | Feb 11, 2021

What is a security map?

Security maps are visual aid documents that assist in the internal planning of security procedures within a building. At the heart of a security map are the walls and doors of each floor. Then, security asset locations throughout the building are documented with icon indicators and placed on top of the floor plan. Items such as security cameras, alarm pulls, mirrors and emergency alert systems are just a few things that are commonly found on a security map.

Please note that security maps are not meant to be placed on the wall for public display or reference.

Do I need security maps?

Security maps can be an extremely helpful tool for any organization with buildings where security protocols play a large role in the safety of its occupants. If your organization is looking for ways to improve your internal security planning, it’s worth looking into. School buildings, public offices, medical facilities and business occupancies are among the most common industry building types to request these.

In addition to improved security organization, having up-to-date security maps can help avoid asset loss and unnecessary purchases as well as save time when updating your buildings’ security systems.

Things to include on a security map

Security maps typically include, but are not limited to, the following information:

  • Camera locations
  • Card Access locations
  • Knox Box locations
  • Alarm pull locations
  • Exit locations
  • Any other safety asset locations

The maps also include additional descriptive floor plan information. See the sample provided above for reference.
